Authoritarianism isn’t just something that happens in distant governments or history books—it can show up in families, religious groups, workplaces, and communities.
In this educational talk, Sarah Patch, LPCC will explore what authoritarianism looks like in everyday life, how it affects mental health, and the pathways toward healing.
Drawing on the work of experts like Dr. Steven Hassan and Dr. Janja Lalich, we’ll look at the psychological dynamics of control, coercion, and undue influence—along with practical tools for recognizing these patterns and reclaiming personal agency.

This talk is open to both mental health professionals and members of the public. If you’ve experienced authoritarian environments—or work with people who have—you’ll leave with a deeper understanding and more language to describe these complex experiences.
